Flags at Half-Staff for Patrick Trout
August 18, 2026
Governor Gretchen Whitmer ordered U.S. and Michigan flags to be lowered to half-staff on Tuesday, August 18, 2026, to honor Detroit firefighter Patrick Trout, who passed away in the line of duty on January 5, 2026. Trout served 12 years with the Detroit Fire Department and was also a retired U.S. Army Sergeant who served in the National Guard and Army Reserves. The governor's office noted that Trout's family specifically requested this date for the flags to be lowered. The state recognizes his duty, honor, and selfless service with this tribute.
Flag protocol
Flags should be hoisted first to the peak for an instant and then lowered to the half-staff position, with the process reversed before the flag is lowered for the day.
