Flags at Half-Staff for Charles W. Walker Sr.
August 24, 2026
Augusta Mayor Garnett Johnson ordered flags at City of Augusta facilities to be lowered to half-staff in honor of former Georgia State Senator Charles W. Walker Sr., a pioneering political leader who became Georgia's first African-American Senate Majority Leader in 1996. Walker passed away on August 18, 2026, at age 78, after a distinguished career championing economic development, education, and community investments throughout Augusta and Georgia. The flag order reflects the community's respect for his historic contributions and legacy of public service.
