Flags at Half-Staff for Army Cpl. George F. Sepsey

June 13, 2026

Governor Gretchen Whitmer ordered flags to half-staff across Michigan to honor Army Corporal George F. Sepsey, who was killed in action on November 26, 1942, during combat against Japanese forces in Papua New Guinea. His remains were identified through laboratory analysis in April 2025 after being buried as an unknown soldier. Sepsey's remains are being laid to rest on June 13 at Mount Hope Catholic Cemetery in Croswell, Michigan, bringing closure to his family nearly 84 years after his death.

Flag protocol

Flags should be hoisted to the peak for an instant and then lowered to half-staff position, with the process reversed when lowering for the day.
