Flags at Half-Staff for Carl Kunasek

Governor Katie Hobbs ordered flags at all state buildings to be lowered to half-staff from sunrise to sunset on August 1, 2026, in honor of former Arizona Senate President Carl Kunasek's burial service. Kunasek, who died on July 20, 2026, at age 94, spent more than two decades in public service, serving in both chambers of the Arizona Legislature and later as a federal official and state utility regulator. He was particularly recognized for helping create the Arizona Health Care Cost Containment System, Arizona's Medicaid program, which has provided healthcare coverage to hundreds of thousands of Arizonans. Hobbs remembered him as a dedicated public servant whose work improved the lives of millions of Arizonans.
