Flags at Half-Staff for Corporal Jackie Lee Thurman
August 8, 2026
Governor J.B. Pritzker ordered U.S. and Illinois flags to be flown at half-staff on August 8, 2026, in honor of U.S. Army Corporal Jackie Lee Thurman, a Korean War soldier whose remains were identified after 75 years. Thurman was 19 years old when he went missing during the Korean War on September 3, 1950, during North Korean forces attack on United Nations defense positions in South Korea. His flag-lowering ceremony coincides with his graveside service with full military honors at I.O.O.F. Cemetery near Norris City, Illinois.
Flag protocol
All U.S. and Illinois flags covered by the Illinois Flag Display Act will be lowered to half-staff from sunrise until sunset on Saturday, August 8, 2026.
