Flags at Half-Staff for George R. Ariyoshi

Governor Josh Green of Hawaii has ordered flags to be lowered to half-staff at the Hawaii State Capitol, all state offices and agencies, and all Hawaii National Guard facilities to honor the life and legacy of former Governor George R. Ariyoshi. Ariyoshi, Hawaii's third and longest-serving governor (1974-1986) and the first Asian-American elected governor of any U.S. state, passed away on April 19, 2026, at the age of 100. This flag order reflects the gratitude of the people of Hawaii for Governor Ariyoshi's historic leadership, lifelong commitment to public service, and extraordinary contributions to the state.

Flag protocol

Flags shall be lowered from sunrise on Friday, September 18, 2026, and remain at half-staff through sunset on Monday, September 21, 2026, the day of Governor Ariyoshi's interment. At sunrise on Tuesday, September 22, the flags shall be raised to full staff.
