Flags at Half-Staff for Kendrick Lamont Key Jr.

July 22, 2026

Virginia Governor Abigail Spanberger ordered flags to fly at half-staff on all state and local buildings in Virginia to honor U.S. Army 1st Lieutenant Kendrick Lamont Key Jr. of Richmond, who died attempting to rescue a fellow soldier. Key, 27, died in May after jumping into the Atlantic Ocean to help a soldier who had fallen off a cliff during a recreational hike in Morocco while participating in the African Lion training exercise. His final act of selfless leadership demonstrated his deep commitment to his unit and his fellow soldiers.

Flag protocol

Flags shall be flown at half-staff on all state and local buildings and grounds in Virginia.
