August 26, 2024
Governor Tony Evers signed Executive Order #236 ordering flags to half-staff on August 26, 2024, to honor U.S. Army Air Forces Sergeant Jack H. Hohlfeld, who died as a prisoner of war during World War II. After surviving the Bataan Death March, Hohlfeld was held captive in the Cabanatuan Japanese POW camp where he died on December 26, 1942. More than 80 years later, his remains were positively identified in May 2024 and returned to Wisconsin for burial, allowing his family and the nation to finally pay proper respects to this decorated military hero who gave his life defending American values and freedoms.
